Dragon Spacing out of Singleback Wing Slot is a classic spacing concept designed to stretch the field horizontally against zone coverage. The diagram shows a deep crossing route from the backside receiver that clears out over the middle, while the three receivers to the strong side run a spacing combo: a flat route, a quick out, and a corner route stacked vertically to occupy the sideline and outside zone. The primary read progression starts with the flat route as the underneath outlet, works to the spacing routes at the sticks, and finishes with the deep cross if the middle of the field opens up against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells.
Defensive Reads
Check safety depth pre-snap: two high safeties suggest Cover 4 or Cover 2, which this spacing concept is designed to exploit with the flat and out combo. Watch the flat defender post-snap since his width determines whether the quick out or flat route is open first. Identify the middle linebacker depth before the snap, since a shallow backer can jump the deep cross and turn it into a user pick six. Cover 3 with a sky safety rotating down can take away the deep cross entirely, forcing the quarterback to live underneath with the spacing routes. Man coverage with a linebacker matched on the crosser is a green light to attack that route immediately, since he rarely has the speed to stay in phase.
Usage Tips
Use this play on third and medium to third and long situations where the spacing combo can settle into soft zone windows at the sticks.
Read the flat defender pre-snap: if he widens with the flat route, the quick out behind him becomes the easy completion.
Against Cover 3, hot route the deep cross into a dig if you see the middle linebacker sitting in the hole, since the crosser can get grabbed by a lurking backer.
Pair this with PA Y Corner or PA Dagger from the same set to keep defenses honest, since Dragon Spacing looks similar pre-snap but attacks underneath instead of vertically.
Combine with Y Stick on early downs to condition defenders to sit on shallow routes, then hit the deep cross once linebackers start jumping the spacing routes.
