PA Dagger from Singleback Wing Slot 12 personnel is a play-action shot play built around the classic dagger concept. Off the run fake, the outside receiver runs a deep vertical seam (yellow) to clear out the deep third or occupy a safety, while the inside receiver runs a dig underneath at intermediate depth (red route breaking hard across the middle). A flat route to the boundary (blue, breaking away from the formation) and a checkdown/flare from the backfield (blue route running underneath from the line) give the quarterback outlets if the top of the concept is covered. This is a play-action pass designed as both a Cover 2 beater and Cover 3 beater, with the primary read progression going vertical seam first to clear coverage, then working down to the dig as the true first read against zone drops, and finally checking down to the flat or flare route if the middle is clogged.
Pre-snap, check safety depth: two high safeties often signal Cover 2 or Cover 4, which is vulnerable to the dig sitting behind linebackers. Watch for a single high safety rotating late, which usually means Cover 3 or Cover 1, making the seam route the key stress point on the deep defender. Post-snap, key the flat defender: if he widens with the flat route, the dig window opens up immediately behind him. Look for user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate middle, since they can jump the dig route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Beware blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the play-action fake slows the quarterback's launch point and can lead to sacks if protection is not accounted for.
Sell the run fake by holding the play-action button long enough to freeze linebackers, especially against aggressive run-fit defenses.
Pre-snap, identify two deep safeties versus one deep safety to determine whether the seam or the dig will be open first.
Against Cover 2, target the dig running behind the underneath zone defenders and in front of the safeties for a big chunk gain.
Against Cover 3, the seam route can occupy the deep third defender, opening a throwing lane for the dig behind the flat defender.
Pair this play with HB Dive or 26 Duo from the same set to set up the run fake, then call PA Dagger once the defense starts biting on run action.
Use this on early downs or second-and-medium when defenses are more likely to sell out on the run look.
