Off Tackle from Singleback Wing Slot is a gap scheme run play designed to hit off the edge of the offensive tackle. The diagram shows two vertical releases from the outside receivers to occupy the deep defenders while the offensive line and TE personnel work down blocks and kick outs at the point of attack, with the HB taking a lead path and cutting off the edge as shown by the red arrow. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the tackle box, read the kick out block from the TE or FB, and decide between bouncing outside or cutting up inside the double team.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth and gap alignment pre-snap since stacked or crashing linebackers can blow up the kick out block before it develops. Identify if the defense is running an odd front with a nose shaded to the play side gap, this clogs the off tackle lane and forces a cutback read. Key the edge defender or outside linebacker's leverage, if they are squeezing hard inside the ball carrier should bounce it outside the kick out block. Look for user controlled defenders flowing hard to contain since this tips a jet sweep or edge blitz call meant to erase the off tackle lane. This run struggles against heavy blitz packages that overload the play side gap, so if you see extra defenders stacked to the strength check to a cutback or misdirection run instead.

Usage Tips

Use Off Tackle on early downs when you want to establish gap integrity and set up play action later in the drive since this play shares blocking shells with PA Power O and PA Boot Y Leak in this set.

Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle alignment since the off tackle lane needs a numbers advantage to hit clean.

If the defense shows a stacked front or heavy blitz look, motion out of it or check to HB Dive or 26 Duo which hit different gaps but keep the same run action.

Trust the kick out block and press the hole hard, patience here gets you stuffed since off tackle is designed to hit fast once the double team and kick out develop.
