HB Slip Screen out of Singleback Wing Slot releases both outside receivers vertically to clear the deep zones while the slot receiver runs an out and up to occupy the corner, and the offensive line sets up in slip screen protection before releasing to lead block for the HB out into the flat. The running back slips out to the flat behind the disguised protection and looks to catch the ball in open space with linemen leading the way. This is a screen play designed to punish aggressive pass rush calls and blitz packages, with the primary read being the HB in the flat once the linemen get out in front.

Defensive Reads

Key the defensive ends and outside linebackers immediately after the snap, since if they crash upfield without containing the flat, the screen is live. Watch underneath zone linebackers in Cover 2 or Cover 3, because a defender sitting in the flat or reading the quarterback's eyes can jump the route and blow up the play. User controlled defenders who sit and read instead of rushing are the biggest threat to this concept, so if the user spies the backfield, be ready to check out of the screen. Man coverage with off ball linebackers biting on the vertical releases opens up the widest lane for the HB, so look for corners turning their backs to the football on the outside routes. Heavy interior blitzes that collapse the pocket before the linemen can release into their blocks will beat this play, especially if defensive tackles win quickly and disrupt the screen's timing.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and short when the defense shows an aggressive pre-snap blitz look or edge pressure package.

Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing hard off the edge, since that lane is exactly what the linemen use to release into space.

If the defense shows man coverage with no underneath zone defenders sitting near the line, the screen has a clean lane, but if you see zone drop linebackers sinking immediately, consider checking to a different play at the line.

Pair this with Four Verticals or PA Boot Y Sail earlier in a series so the defense respects the deep passing game and bites harder on their blitz calls, setting up the slip screen as a change of pace.

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing blitz, then snap into the screen once you see extra rushers commit.
