The HB takes a jab step one way before countering back across the formation, letting the line flow open a lane opposite the initial flow to freeze linebackers. This is a pure run play designed to attack overaggressive run fits, and the primary read progression starts with the playside gap before working back across the formation if the backside cutback lane opens up.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebackers flowing hard to the initial step direction, since that is exactly what this play is designed to exploit. If the defense shows a stacked box with linebackers reading run keys and staying square, the misdirection loses its impact and gets bogged down. Man coverage on the two vertical routes with safeties staying deep can bait the offense into throwing, so honor the run fake but keep eyes on those verticals. Look for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the backside cutback lane, since that is the counter to this scheme and will blow up the misdirection immediately. Aggressive edge defenders crashing down on the initial flow can be gap-exchanged, so a disciplined defensive end holding contain shuts down the cutback.
