Slot Deep out of Singleback Wing Slot is a smash flood concept that stretches one side of the field vertically and horizontally. The backside X runs a corner route while the inside receiver on that side clears vertically on a go, and the playside slot runs a quick out into the flat with the outside receiver working a deep flood route away from the trips look. The RB releases into a shallow flat/check route underneath, giving the quarterback a five level read from deep corner down to the flat. This is primarily a zone beater built to overload one half of the field, forcing a safety or corner to choose between the corner route and the flood receiver, with the underneath flat and RB check serving as the primary and secondary reads against man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Read the cornerback over the flood side receiver at the snap, if he sinks deep with the corner route the underneath out or flat should be wide open. Watch the flow of the middle linebacker and any user controlled defender dropping into a lurk position, since this concept is vulnerable to a robber sitting in the intermediate zone between the corner and flat. Against Cover 2 look for the safety rotation, if the safety commits to the deep corner route the flat and RB check become the answer underneath. This play struggles against aggressive man blitzes that get pressure before the corner route fully develops, so watch pre-snap for stacked box looks or overloaded blitz packages on the flood side. Cover 4 quarters coverage can be a problem since it has numbers to match both vertical routes, so be ready to check down to the RB quickly if you see four defenders bail deep at the snap.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two high or single high safety look, since this concept thrives against two high shells that cannot cover both the corner and the deep out. Use the flat route as your first read against Cover 3 or Cover 4 because the corner defender flowing to the deep third will often widen and open the flat window. If you see man coverage, hot route the RB into a quicker option route or use him as a check valve since the deep routes take time to develop. This play pairs well with PA Y Cross Flood and PA Boot Y Sail in the same set since all three attack similar flood concepts and keep the defense guessing between play action and straight drop back reads. Best called on second and medium or third and long when you need a explosive gain but still have a checkdown safety valve underneath.
