Y-go Slot Cross out of Singleback Wing Slot is a man beater built around a vertical clear-out and a shallow crosser working underneath it. The Y (tight end) runs a go route to stretch the deep coverage and occupy a safety, while the crosser works from one side of the field to the other underneath, sitting in the void left by the vertical stem. This is a straight dropback pass play with no play-action element, so the primary read progression is the go route first to see if the corner or safety gets beat over the top, then working down to the crosser as your check down against man coverage or if the shell rotates away from the vertical shot.

Defensive Reads

Check the free safety depth and alignment before the snap, since a single high safety who is cheating toward the boundary opens up the go route to the field. Watch for man coverage on the Y at the snap, as any bump or trail technique with no safety help creates an easy explosive play if the throw is timed correctly. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells that rotate a safety to the go route side, since this take away the vertical shot but opens a larger crossing lane underneath. Key the underneath linebackers and their zone drops, since a linebacker who sits too flat footed in a hook zone will get run off by the crosser and create a wide throwing lane. Watch for a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, since a smart human defender will jump the crossing route if the quarterback stares it down too long.

Usage Tips

Use presnap motion or a quick peek at the free safety to confirm single high versus two high before the snap, since the go route needs a soft spot in the deep coverage to hit.

If you see man coverage on the Y with no safety help over the top, take the shot down the field immediately off the snap instead of waiting through your progression.

Against zone shells, look to hit the crosser in stride as it crosses the field, since it naturally settles into the void between the underneath zone defenders and the deep zone.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or hitch to punish any defender who cheats inside to help on the crosser.
