The X receiver runs the deep corner route from the boundary while the TE and inline receiver settle into two staggered flat/drag routes underneath, and the HB releases on a check release flat route to the opposite side. This is a classic Cover 2 beater: the corner route stretches the deep safety while the flat and drag routes sit underneath the cornerback, creating a high low read on the flat defender. Primary progression starts with the corner route looking to see if the safety bites, then works down to the shallow crossers if the corner sits on top.

Defensive Reads

Read the deep half safeties before the snap, if they are aligned at depth in a two high shell this play has a strong chance to work against the corner route. Watch the flat defender or cornerback at the snap, if he sinks with the corner route the underneath drag and flat routes will be wide open for an easy completion. Key the linebacker depth over the middle, shallow drops from the second level linebackers can clog the drag routes and force a check down to the HB flat route. Against Cover 3 or single high looks the corner route loses its advantage since there is no true flat to corner conflict, expect this play to get shut down by aggressive underneath zone drops. Man coverage with a blitz behind it is the biggest threat, if you see man alignment on the outside receivers with linebackers crashing downhill get the ball out quickly to the HB flat route or hot route into a quick option.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify two high safeties before the snap since this play is built specifically to attack Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells where the corner sits underneath the corner route.

If the defense shows single high safety look, be ready to check to a different concept or hot route the corner route into a deep post to attack the vacated deep half.

Use the corner route as your first read on third and medium to long since it stretches the flat defender and creates natural separation against zone.

Hot route the check release HB flat route into a stick or option route if you see man coverage to give yourself a quick answer against blitz looks.

Pair this play with Y Stick or Quick Slant on early downs to set up defenders reading run action, then hit them with the Smash concept once they start jumping underneath routes.
