Smash out of Singleback Wing Slot lines up with a wing TE and slot receiver stacked to the boundary side and a flanker to the field. The backside outside receiver runs a deep corner route while the inside receiver sits down on a flat route, creating the classic high low smash concept to that side, with a third receiver running a quick out and up (option) route and a shallow flat route from the running back on the opposite side. This is a Cover 2 beater built to attack the corner who has to choose between the flat defender and the deep corner throw, and the primary read progression starts with the deep corner route before working down to the underneath flat and out routes.
Defensive Reads
Identify two deep safeties pre-snap, this alignment signals Cover 2 or Tampa 2 and tells the corner route will be live in the boundary. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks with the corner route the flat route underneath will be wide open for an easy completion. Key the corner's initial jump, a corner who bails deep immediately opens up the flat and out routes for a quick user read. Look for user controlled safeties cheating toward the corner route side, this leaves the backside flat route to the running back uncovered. Man coverage with no help over the top shuts this down quickly, since the corner route lacks the leverage to separate without a natural pick from the flat runner.
Usage Tips
Check for two deep safeties pre-snap since this play is purpose built to exploit Cover 2 and Tampa 2 shells.
If the corner sits low on the flat route, throw the corner route on time before the safety can rotate over the top.
Use the out and up route as a hot beater against aggressive man corners who jump the out portion of the route.
Pair this play with PA Y Corner or PA Sail Dig in the same set to keep defenders honest on the same high low concept from run action.
Best called on second and medium or third and short so the underdneath flat and out routes remain live checkdown options if the corner window is not open.
