Breakdown

Four Verticals out of Singleback Wing Slot sends all four eligible receivers vertically up the field, with the two outside receivers releasing straight up the numbers, the tight end from the wing running a vertical seam, and the slot receiver pushing a shorter go route up the middle of the field. The HB stays in to help protect while the offensive line sets up in a standard pass protection look, giving the quarterback a clean pocket to work through his levels. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater, designed to stress deep safeties by flooding the field with four vertical stems and forcing a numbers disadvantage on either half of the field. The primary read progression starts outside with the boundary go route, works to the seam from the wing tight end, then to the deep middle route from the slot, and finally to the far outside go route if the coverage rotates away.

Defensive Reads

Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, which signals Cover 2 and tells you the seams and the sideline top of the numbers will be open before the corners can recover. A single high safety with corners in press or outside shade points to Cover 3, so key the flow of the deep third defenders and throw off their leverage into the seam. If the middle linebacker or nickel defender sprints to the deep middle immediately after the snap, that is a Tampa 2 look, so avoid the deep middle read and work the seam or outside go route instead. Watch for a slot corner or safety cheating into the box pre-snap, since that often signals a blitz, and if the protection breaks down quickly you need to get the ball out to the shortest developing go route immediately. Man coverage killers like a nickel blitz or Cover 1 robber can be identified by tight man coverage with no deep safety help over the top, which means your outside go routes against a lesser corner become the primary target.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, two deep safeties with soft corners usually means Cover 2 and you want to attack the seams between the numbers and the hash. Single high safety with corners playing outside leverage tells you Cover 3 is likely, so target the seam route since it sits in the void between the deep third defenders. Use hot routes to convert the slot go into a deep middle read or bend it into the honey hole against Cover 3 if the middle linebacker drops too shallow. This play shines on second and long or third and long when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells rather than bring pressure. Pair Four Verticals with PA Dagger or PA Y Corner from the same set so the defense has to respect the deep shots while you mix in shorter combo routes underneath to keep them honest.
