HB Slam is a downhill dive run out of Singleback Wing Slot 12 personnel, with two inline tight ends stacked to the strong side alongside the offensive line and the halfback aligned directly behind the quarterback. The diagram shows a straight dive blocking scheme, the offensive line and both tight ends fire off the ball to seal running lanes while the halfback takes the handoff and hits the hole with no misdirection or pulling linemen shown. This is a pure run play designed to attack downhill gaps quickly rather than beat any specific man or zone coverage, and the primary read is a simple one, hit the initial crease off the tackle's block and pick a lane based on the first level flow of the linebackers.

Defensive Reads

Watch for stacked box fronts pre-snap, if both linebackers are sitting tight to the line at four to five yards depth they are likely reading run and will fill fast. Identify whether the defense is in a run-fit alignment with the strong safety cheating down near the line of scrimmage, this signals an extra run defender and makes HB Slam less effective. Look for gap or A-gap blitzes from the interior linebackers, since HB Slam relies on movement up front, a well-timed inside blitz can blow up the play before the hole develops. On the defensive side, spy the tight ends at the snap, if they are climbing to the second level cleanly the linebackers are likely being displaced, opening cutback lanes for the user to exploit. Beware of defenses stacked in odd fronts with a nose tackle in the A-gap, this alignment can clog the primary running lane shown in the diagram and force a negative play.

Usage Tips

Use HB Slam on short yardage and goal line situations where a quick, decisive downhill run can convert without needing a big blocking scheme to develop.

Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or more defenders stacked in the box this play is a tougher sell so consider audibling to a pass concept from this set like Quick Slant or Y Stick instead.

Pair HB Slam with PA FL Dive or PA Boot TE Leak later in the series so the defense has to respect the same look off play-action after seeing the dive hit hard on early downs.

User the fullback or lead blocker if the play has one to seal off a blitzing linebacker at the point of attack, this gives your halfback a cleaner initial crease.

Run this out of tendency-breaking personnel, since Wing Slot 12 personnel already looks run-heavy, mix in HB Slam sparingly against defenses that are keying run based on formation recognition.
