HB Slam is a downhill dive run out of Singleback Wing Slot 12 personnel, with both TEs and the wing attached to the formation for extra blocking surfaces. The line diagram shows the HB taking a quick handoff and slamming straight into the B-gap behind the double TE side, relying on the offensive line to create a vertical crease rather than pulling linemen. This is a gap run play designed to punish light boxes and out-leveraged defensive fronts, with the primary read being the HB identifying the first open crease off the double team at the point of attack.
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, stacked linebackers sitting tight to the line signal a run blitz that can blow up this play at the mesh point. Identify the defensive front alignment, a bear front or heavy nickel package with extra defenders in the box is the biggest threat to HB Slam. Post-snap, key the play side defensive tackle and linebacker fit, if they get a clean double team read and fill the gap immediately the run has nowhere to go. User-controlled defenders flying downhill from a safety or linebacker spy position can diagnose this play quickly since there is no misdirection or play-action element to hold them. Light boxes with only five or six defenders and safeties playing deep in a two high shell are the ideal defensive look for this play to break through untouched.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for a numbers advantage.
Use this play on short yardage and third and one or fourth and one situations where a quick, hard-nosed gap run is unlikely to be diagnosed pre-snap.
Pair HB Slam with HB Zone Wk or Inside Zone Split in the same personnel to keep the defense guessing between gap and zone run concepts without changing personnel.
If the defense stacks the box with a run blitz look, be ready to hot route the fullback or wing into a chip block to buy the HB extra time to find the crease.
Sequence HB Slam early in a series, then come back with PA FL Dive or PA Boot TE Leak from the same Singleback Wing Slot look to punish linebackers who key run fast.
