PA Boot Slide is a play-action boot concept out of Singleback Wing Slot 12 personnel that shows run action to the backfield before the QB rolls opposite. Off the fake, the backside receiver runs a deep corner or go route, the TE from the wing releases on a deep vertical seam, and the outlet TE runs a shallow drag that slides across the formation into the boot flow, giving the QB a built in checkdown while he rolls. This is a play-action man beater at its core, since the crossing drag naturally creates separation against man defenders and the corner route stretches the boundary on any inverted or Cover 3 rotation. The primary read progression starts with the deep corner route, works down to the vertical seam, and finishes with the sliding drag as the checkdown once the QB reaches the top of his boot.

Defensive Reads

Read the linebacker depth at the snap: shallow linebackers who bite on the run fake leave the drag route wide open as the QB rolls out. Watch the boundary corner on the play side. If he sinks into a deep zone drop, the corner route will be covered, so check down immediately to the drag or seam. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 1 shells before the snap, since the rollout action attacks the edge defender responsible for containing the QB, and a lurking linebacker in the flat can jump the drag route. Look for user controlled safeties rotating late to the boot side. If a defender flashes to jump the corner route, the seam or drag becomes the better outlet. Beware of contain blitzes or edge pressure from the play side. If the offensive line cannot pick up an overload blitz, the QB may be forced to throw early or take a sack before routes fully develop.

Usage Tips

Sell the play fake by holding the run animation as long as possible before rolling out, since defenders keying run flow will bite on the play action and open throwing lanes underneath.

Use this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short to medium) when defenses are more likely to load the box or run blitz, since the boot action punishes overaggressive linebackers and safeties.

Check the pre-snap safety alignment: if you see two high safeties, prioritize the drag route since the corner will be capped, but if you see a single high safety rolled to the boot side, take a shot on the deep corner route.

Combine this play with HB Dive, Inside Zone Split, or 26 Duo earlier in a series to set up the run fake, then call PA Boot Slide once defenders start crashing downhill on run reads.

If the defense shows man coverage with no safety help over the top, hot route the drag runner into a deeper option route or manually user the drag to exploit any leverage mismatch against a linebacker.

Avoid calling this on 3rd and long against zone heavy defenses, since the boot rollout limits the number of routes flooding one side and zone defenders can sit on the drag.
