H Zone Str is an outside zone run to the strong side out of Singleback Wing Slot 12 personnel, with the offensive line and both tight ends flowing in unison toward the play side to seal the edge. The HB takes a stretch path, reading the zone blocking wall before deciding between bouncing outside or cutting back inside based on the flow of the defensive front. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression is the HB reading the playside double team and TE reach block first, then working the cutback lane if the edge gets clogged.
Pre-snap, identify the strong safety and outside linebacker alignment to the tight end side, a heavy walk-up signals an edge-set run blitz. Key the playside defensive end and outside linebacker leverage, if they are crashing hard down the line the cutback lane will open behind them. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker flowing fast to the sideline, this is the biggest threat to blow up the stretch before the HB can bounce outside. Beats light fronts and passive zone shells that do not commit extra defenders to the strong side edge. Gets shut down by overloaded fronts, aggressive edge blitzes, and defenses that key the TE combo blocks and fill the cutback lane immediately.
Run this against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box to maximize your blocking numbers advantage.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at safety depth to confirm the defense is not stacking the strong side with an extra defender.
If the defense shows a heavy overhang or walked up slot corner to the strength, consider hot routing the backside TE into a quick out to hold the flow linebacker.
Pair this with Off Tackle or HB Zone Wk from the same set to keep linebackers guessing between stretch and downhill zone runs.
Best used on early downs (first or second and short to medium) to stay ahead of the chains and set up play-action shots like PA Boot Y Sail later in the series.
