H Zone Str is an outside zone run out of Singleback Wing Slot with 12 personnel, sending the offensive line and attached TEs in a lateral zone blocking scheme to the strong side. The playside TE and tackle reach block to seal the edge while the fullback/H-back leads through the alley, giving the HB a stretch read to bounce, bend, or bang based on the flow of the defensive front. This is a pure run play designed to attack the edge with zone blocking rather than a man or gap scheme, and the primary read progression for the HB is playside cutback lane first, then bend it inside if the edge gets squeezed, then cut all the way back if backside pursuit overcommits.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the strong side defensive end and outside linebacker alignment since a wide 9-technique or edge blitz look can blow this up before the reach block gets set. Watch for an overloaded strong side front with extra defenders in the box, that alignment is built to stuff zone runs at the point of attack. Post-snap, key the flow of the linebackers, if they flow hard playside on the snap the cutback lane behind them opens up for a big gain. This play struggles against gap-sound 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with disciplined linebackers who stay home and read their run fits rather than crashing downhill. A user-controlled defender spying the backfield or sitting in the alley can blow up the lead blocker and force a negative play, so scout for that user tendency before calling it repeatedly.

Usage Tips

Run this early in a series on first or second down to establish tempo and set up your play-action shots later in the set like PA Boot Y Sail or PA Y Corner. Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or more in the box you want to bail into a quick pass rather than force this into a stacked front. Use the flick or L2/LT to send the HB pre-snap motion if available to get a numbers advantage read on the edge defender before the snap. Pair this with HB Zone Wk and Mtn Wide Zone Wk in the same set so defenders cannot key on blocking direction, since all three look identical at the snap. Against fast flow linebackers who fly to the sideline, hit the cutback lane immediately instead of trying to bounce it outside into pursuit.
