Jet Touch Pass (x Close) is a quick timing RPO-style pass out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset that uses jet motion across the formation to sell run action before the quarterback fires a touch pass to the jet man on the move. The x receiver runs a closing route underneath as a secondary option while the offensive line shows run blocking to freeze linebackers and hold the edge defenders. This is a horizontal stretch concept built to punish overaggressive run fits and outside contain, with the primary read being the jet motion man in space and the closing route from x as the check down against defenders who stay home.
Pre-snap, check if the defense is aligned in a run stopping front with linebackers cheating toward the jet motion side, which signals they will overpursue and open up the touch pass window. Identify single high shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1 since the flow to the jet man often pulls the strong safety or overhang defender out of position. Post-snap, watch for a user controlled linebacker spying the jet motion man instead of respecting the run fake, as this is the primary defender who can blow up the play. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined linebackers who stay square to the line and do not bite on motion will shut this down by keeping numbers over the flow. Watch for edge defenders staying home on contain rather than following the jet motion, since that forces the quarterback into the x closing route as the only outlet.
Snap the ball right as the jet motion man crosses the backfield to maximize the timing window before the defense can rotate to the flow.
Use this against defenses that consistently crash down on jet sweep motion since the touch pass exploits linebackers biting on the run fake.
Hot route the x closing route deeper or to a speed cut if you see a corner sitting flat footed in off man to create more separation.
Pair this call with Fake Jet Scissors or Fake Jet HB Wheel earlier in a drive so the defense respects the run fake and bites even harder on the jet action here.
Best used on first and second down in run heavy personnel situations where defenses are keyed to stop the edge run threat.
