Breakdown
PA Cheat Comeback runs a play-action fake out of the Wing Slot Offset look, holding the linebackers with the run fake before releasing four routes into the passing concept. The backside receiver runs a deep comeback breaking back to the sideline, the outside vertical climbs up the seam and works into a corner-ish route up top, and both the TE and inline receiver on the strong side break underneath on in routes toward the middle of the field, giving you a layered stretch from deep comeback to intermediate crossers to a shallow drag underneath. The primary read starts with the deep comeback against off coverage or single high safeties, then works down to the in-breaking routes underneath if the cornerback sits on top of the route.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage with a cornerback playing tight to the line is vulnerable to the comeback route since the defender has to flip his hips and recover Zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 that keep the corner deep will let the comeback sit in a soft spot, throw it before the underneath zone defender can close Watch for a user linebacker spying the play-action fake, if he stays home in the box the underneath in routes have more room to work Blitz heavy fronts that crash hard on the run fake leave the middle of the field open for the in-breaking routes against man coverage Two high safety shells with aggressive slot defenders can jump the underneath in routes, so be ready to come off that read to the deep comeback
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or second and medium when defenses respect the run fake from Wing Slot Offset personnel
Check the cornerback depth before the snap, if he is playing off man or soft zone the comeback route will be open on the break
Hot route the underneath in routes to sit down faster against zone drops if linebackers are sinking deep into the throwing lanes
Pair this with Inside Zone Split or Dbl Mtn Inside Zone Split earlier in the drive so the play fake actually freezes second level defenders
Sequence this after a few hard run plays out of this formation so linebackers bite on the fake and open up the comeback and in routes
