Duo lines up out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset with 12 personnel, showing two wide receivers split far outside and a bunched formation of tight ends and the fullback/TE wing tight to the core. This is a power run play built on a double team blocking scheme at the point of attack, designed to displace the interior defensive line before the backside linebacker climbs to seal the alley. The primary read is the playside double team combo block: the runningback presses downhill looking to press the double team gap first, then bounces off the read of the first true linebacker threat to the play side.
Defensive Reads
Look for a stacked front with three or four down linemen and two inside linebackers sitting shallow at five yards or less, that is the ideal shell for this play to hit. User the playside linebacker as the defense. If he sits and reads the double team, flow him downhill to fill the gap before the runningback presses. Watch for a run blitz off the edge from a slot corner or overhang defender. Duo's double team scheme is slower to develop and can get gashed by an unblocked edge blitzer. Safeties creeping into the box pre-snap signal a run key. If both safeties are within seven yards, expect extra gap fill support and consider checking to a pass concept instead. Nickel and dime packages with light boxes are prime matchups for Duo since there are fewer bodies to defeat the double team combo up front.
Usage Tips
Run this out of second and short or first and ten to stay ahead of the chains without tipping pass intentions.
Check the box count pre-snap. Duo wants a light box with only two off ball linebackers so the double teams have a clean angle to climb.
If the defense shows a bunched front with extra men in the box, motion out of Wing Slot Offset or check to Inside Zone from the same personnel to avoid a numbers disadvantage.
Use the RB's natural press and cut vision. Do not force outside speed. Let the double team block develop and press the gap before bouncing to either side.
Pair this with RPO Alert Bubble and Inside Zone from the same set so the defense cannot key run fits based on formation alone, keeping linebackers honest on run blitzes.
