The backside receiver stems vertical before breaking to the corner, stretching the defense horizontally while the in-cut route settles behind the shallow drag. The HB checks the box for a blitz before releasing into a short check-down route, giving the QB a safety valve if both levels are covered. This is primarily a man beater that also stresses single-high safety shells, with the primary read progression starting on the deep in-cut route, working down to the shallow crosser, and finishing with the HB underneath.

Defensive Reads

Identify the deep safety pre-snap because a single-high look opens the in-cut route as the primary window, while two-high shells force the QB to work the shallow crosser instead. Watch the underneath linebackers at the snap since aggressive blitz shows will vacate the shallow crossing lane and make that route the fastest available throw. Key on the cornerback over the vertical route on the perimeter, since press man alignment signals a strong chance the deep in route can separate on the break. User lurk defenders sitting in the shallow middle can jump the crossing route, so if you see a defender sink into that zone early, expect the QB to check to the HB underneath.
