Mtn QB Sweep is a designed QB run out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset that starts with a jet-style motion man crossing the formation before the snap, drawing flow from the second level. The offensive line and TEs execute a lateral sweep blocking scheme, pulling frontside to wall off edge defenders and create a running lane for the QB to bounce outside. This is not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, it is a gap-scheme run play designed to attack the edge before the defense can fill with pursuit, with the primary read being the QB reading the frontside edge blocks to decide whether to bounce it outside or cut upfield off the sweep flow.
Defensive Reads
Watch the strong safety and outside linebacker alignment before the snap, if they widen with the motion man the edge is accounted for and the sweep lane tightens. Post-snap, key the edge defender's first two steps, if he crashes hard inside to chase pulling linemen the QB should bounce it outside immediately. Man coverage shells with linebackers locked onto the motion man leave the box light and are the easiest matchup to exploit with this sweep. Zone coverage with disciplined linebackers staying square and reading the QB's mesh point can shut this down fast, especially if the flow defender stays home instead of biting on motion. Look for a user-controlled defender spying the QB from depth, since that is the main threat to blow up the sweep before it develops outside the tackle box.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety to match, which tells you if they are keying run flow or staying honest to base alignment.
Attack light boxes with only six or fewer defenders in the box, since the sweep needs the edge defender accounted for by the motion or the pulling blockers.
Hot route the backside TE into a stalk block if you see an unblocked flow defender chasing the motion, this cleans up backside pursuit and protects the cutback lane.
Best called on early downs or short yardage when the defense expects pass out of Shotgun, since the run action off jet motion catches overaggressive zone defenders flowing wrong.
Pair this with Fake Jet HB Wheel or Zone Fake Jet from the same set to keep defenders honest on the sweep action, then hit them with the play-action counter once they start crashing down on the run fake.
