Mtn Switch Wheels is a man beater built off a mountain (switch) release concept that sends both tight ends into switch releases before breaking into wheel routes up the sideline, creating natural rub action against man defenders. The backfield or slot piece works an underneath crosser or flat route to hold linebackers while the wheels stretch the field vertically on either edge. The primary read progression starts with the switch release wheel to your favorite side (look for the pick or rub against man corners), then works to the underneath crosser as a check down if the wheels are taken away by a deep half safety.

Defensive Reads

Check the safety alignment before the snap, two deep safeties with press corners usually signals man match coverage which is exactly what this play wants to attack Watch for a linebacker or nickel defender walked up over the tight ends, that usually means the defense plans to trail the switch release with man technique which opens the rub for the wheel Post snap, key the deep half or deep third defenders, if they sink hard and stay square to the wheel routes without biting on the underneath crosser, this play is likely defended Look for a user controlled defender flashing into a lurk or robber spot in the middle of the field, that defender can jump the underneath crosser and force you to hold the ball longer on the wheels Cover 2 with aggressive flat defenders can be an issue since they can undercut the wheel route stem before it clears the numbers, so recognize a two deep shell early and adjust your protection or check down quickly

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or your alert key to confirm man versus zone before the snap since this play lives and dies on the switch release beating man coverage

If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep zone defenders sitting on the sideline, look off the wheels quickly and check down to the underneath crosser instead of forcing it deep

Attack a defense that shows Cover 1 or Cover 0 since the switch release naturally picks off trailing man corners and linebackers on the wheel routes

Pair this call with Mtn Choice Wheels and Dbl Mtn Counter Y in the same set so the defense has to respect both the switch release passing concept and the mountain run action out of the same personnel and formation look

Use this on second and medium or first down to keep the defense honest, since the double wheel shot play hits big when the defense bites on run action or jumps an underneath route
