Inside Zone Split lines up out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset with 12 personnel, showing two wing tight ends stacked off the line to the left and a tight bunch of five blockers up front with the HB offset in the backfield. This is a pure zone run play, not a pass concept, with the offensive line executing a split zone blocking scheme where a TE or fullback-type blocker kicks across the formation to seal the backside edge while the rest of the line zone steps playside. The primary read is the frontside double team combo up front, with the HB reading the play side A gap first and bouncing to the B or C gap based on the flow of the defensive line and linebacker fill.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a one-high or two-high shell since single-high safeties often signal an extra run defender near the box. Watch the defensive tackles and ends for slanting techniques, since a hard slant away from the play can blow up the zone combo blocks before the HB can press the hole. Key the play side linebacker depth, if he is sitting shallow at four yards or less he can fill the B gap quickly and force a cutback read. Post-snap, track the backside defensive end for a scrape exchange, since a disciplined end who stays home on the split flow action can string the run out and eliminate the cutback lane. This run struggles against odd-front looks with a true nose shade and heavy A gap blitzes, since it clogs the interior lanes the HB needs to read before bouncing outside.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit.
Use this on early downs like first and ten or second and medium to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest.
If the defense shows a heavy blitz look with linebackers creeping to the line, consider hot routing the backside TE into a quick flat route as an outlet instead of forcing the run.
Pair this with Inside Zone and Cheat Inside Zone from the same set so the defense cannot key on personnel or formation tendencies.
Mix in Read Option or PA Slide off the same Wing Slot Offset look to punish linebackers who start flowing hard to the play side on tape.
