Smash Y-Post out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset gives you a classic smash concept to the right paired with a two-man read to the left. On the right side the outside receiver runs a quick hitch/corner-style smash route underneath while the Y (TE) climbs vertically and breaks into a deep post, stretching the flat-to-deep defender high-low. To the left, both the outside receiver and the slot run flat routes at different depths, giving you an easy checkdown or man-beater option away from the smash concept. This is a Cover 2 beater by design: the smash route pins the corner low while the Y-Post attacks the seam vacated by the safety, and the primary read progression starts with the smash flat-to-corner combo before working back to the Y-Post against single-high or two-high shells.
Defensive Reads
Watch the corner over the smash route at the snap: if he sinks to cover the deep post, sit your quick receiver on the flat/hitch for an easy completion. Key the safety over the Y (TE): if he stays flat-footed reading run or bites on the underneath route, the post will come open behind him. Cover 3 with a hard-charging flat defender can undercut the smash concept, so be ready to reset to the left side flat routes as a checkdown. Man coverage with a deep safety help over the top (Cover 1) is the toughest shell for the Y-Post, since the safety can rob the post before it develops. Watch for a linebacker blitz off the edge to the smash side, which can collapse the pocket before the post fully breaks, forcing a quick check to the flat.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two-high or rotating to single-high, since this play is built to punish Cover 2 corners who jump the flat route.
If the corner sits low on the smash route, immediately look to the Y-Post breaking behind him for the explosive gain.
Against man coverage, use the left side flat routes as quick outlets if your Y-Post gets banjo'd or picked up by a safety over the top.
Run this on second and medium or third and short so the smash flat route is a viable conversion option if the post is covered.
Pair this play in sequence with Smash HB Seam or PA Double Post from the same set to keep defenders honest on both the flat and the deep post shell, since those plays share similar route stems but attack different levels.
