Breakdown

Jet PA Cross runs off jet motion across the formation to sell the run fake before the quarterback pulls it back for a play-action pass. Off the fake, the deep crosser works from the strong side all the way across the field for a big-play shot, while the underneath yellow route runs an out to the opposite flat and a third receiver runs a corner route out of the backfield area behind the line to attack the flat or seam. This is a man beater at its core, using the deep cross to create natural separation against man coverage while the flat and corner routes occupy underneath defenders, with the primary read progression starting on the deep crosser, then working down to the corner route breaking outside, and finally checking the flat route as the last resort.

Defensive Reads

Identify the coverage shell before the snap by checking safety alignment, two deep safeties suggest zone coverage that can undercut the deep cross if linebackers sink quickly. Watch for user-controlled linebackers or safeties sitting in the middle of the field, since a disciplined defender there can jump the crosser and turn this into a pick six opportunity. Key on cornerback press alignment, aggressive press man on the outside can disrupt the timing of the flat and corner routes if the defender jams at the line. Look for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the play action fake needs time to develop and a fast blitz can force a quick, low value checkdown. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender and a deep third safety patrolling the crosser lane is the most difficult shell to attack, forcing you to rely on the corner route or an early checkdown instead.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs like first or second and medium to short yardage since the play action fake carries more weight when defenses respect the run.

Watch for safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are sitting shallow or crashing down expecting run, the deep cross has a great chance to hit for explosive yardage.

Hot route the flat route into a deeper option or a shallow drag if you see zone coverage sitting underneath, since the base flat route can get squatted on by linebackers.

Pair this play with Jet HB Angle or Fake Jet HB Wheel in the same set to keep defenses guessing on jet motion, forcing linebackers to respect the run fake even when you are throwing.

Against man coverage, trust the deep cross to break open against trailing defenders, especially if the defense shows Cover 1 or Cover 0 pre-snap with no safety help over the top.
