PA Jet Sweep opens with jet motion across the backfield to sell the sweep fake before the QB pulls it and works a play action passing concept off the run action. Off the fake, the offense sends a deep comeback breaking outside from the boundary receiver, a deep in-cut crossing the field from the far side, and a shallow drag underneath from the inline tight end, while the flat route stretches the sideline to hold the underneath defender honest. The primary read starts with the deep comeback on the boundary if the play fake pulls the safety down, then progresses to the crossing in-route working to the middle of the field before checking down to the flat or drag against zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side safety pre snap, if he creeps toward the box before the snap he is likely selling out on run support and can be beaten deep by the comeback. Key the linebacker level to the jet motion, aggressive linebackers who crash toward the sweep fake open up the crossing in route working behind them. Man coverage on the tight end running the drag is a green light since he has a natural leverage advantage on the shallow crosser against most linebackers and slot corners. Zone shells with a deep half safety staying home take away the comeback route, so look to progress quickly to the crosser or flat against Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells. Watch for a spy or lurk defender sitting in the underneath middle zone, this defender is the primary threat to both the drag and the crossing route on this concept.
Usage Tips
Use the jet motion pre snap to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.
Call this on early downs like first or second and medium when defenses are more likely to bite on the run fake and vacate underneath zones.
If the safety bites hard on the play fake, hit the deep comeback route immediately since the corner will be playing off leverage expecting run support.
Pair this with straight Jet Sweep or Fake Jet HB Wheel from the same set so defenders start keying run fits, then punish overaggressive linebackers with this play action shot.
Hot route the drag to a deeper crosser if you see a robber or lurking linebacker sitting underneath, since that defender is designed to take away the shallow drag first.
