Breakdown

Dbl Mtn Counter Y is a power run play out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset with 12 personnel, using two inline tight ends stacked at the point of attack alongside a wing look. The diagram shows the HB taking a counter step before hitting the hole with pulling linemen leading through the crease, while the two outside receivers stay uninvolved as decoys on vertical stems. This is a pure counter run play, not a pass or RPO, and the primary read is the play side gap: track the pulling guard and lead blocker to decide between the designed crease and a cutback lane if the front flows too hard.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a bubble at the point of attack, since a light box with only five or six defenders in the tackle box is the green light to trust the pulling blockers and hit the hole fast. Identify if the defense crashes down hard on the counter step, which opens a cutback lane behind the backside guard. Beware of a Mike linebacker who stays home instead of biting on the counter action, since he can fill the hole quickly and blow up the timing. Check for an unblocked edge defender on the play side, especially versus odd fronts or a 3-4 look, since that defender can string the run out before the pullers arrive. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the backfield shift, as an aggressive user flow to the counter side can be exploited with a cutback if your blocking sustains long enough.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to keep defenses honest and set up your play-action shots later in the drive.

Check the linebacker depth pre-snap: if both backers are stacked tight to the line, expect a fast flow and be ready to cut back against the grain.

Use motion if the play calls for it to identify man versus zone, since a defender following the motion man across the formation confirms man coverage and tells you the edge defender is occupied.

Pair this with Dbl Mtn PA Slide or PA Slide from the same formation so the defense has to respect the counter action before you hit them with play-action off the identical look.

Against overloaded fronts or heavy blitz packages, kick the play to a quicker hitter like Inside Zone Split to avoid negative plays until the front settles.
