Read Option out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset is a true zone read run with 12 personnel on the field, showing two TEs stacked wide left and a tight bunch look to the play side. The QB reads the play side end or OLB off the mesh point, either keeping it himself on the give-track shown by the yellow arrow or handing off to the HB on the downhill red path. This is a run play designed to attack light boxes and gap exchange defenders, with the primary read being the first unblocked defender outside the tackle box at the snap.
Watch the play side defensive end or OLB immediately after the snap since he is the primary conflict defender the QB is reading on the mesh. Man coverage with an extra run defender crashing downhill from depth can blow this up quickly, so identify any late-rotating safety filling the alley before the snap. Zone fronts that keep the edge defender square and disciplined take away the keep read and force the offense into a low-value handoff read every time. Look for a user-controlled linebacker spying the QB, since that defender can eliminate the keep option entirely and force predictable handoffs. Stacked boxes with 7 or more defenders and an overhang defender crashing hard off the edge shut this play down and should be avoided as a called run.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box to guarantee a numbers advantage.
Use this on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts rather than load up on blitz packages.
If the defensive end sits home and does not crash, pull the ball and take off through the alley since the read side will be hollowed out.
Pair this with Jet Touch Pass or Fake Jet HB Wheel from the same formation to keep defenders honest on the perimeter and slow down aggressive edge defenders trying to squeeze the mesh point.
Motion checks are limited here since the diagram shows no pre-snap motion, so rely on your pre-snap defensive alignment read rather than shifting personnel to bait a defender.
