Breakdown
PA Slide is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset that sells the run fake up front while attacking downfield with a three-man route combo. The two outside receivers run vertical-breaking routes stacked on the same side, with the TE releasing outside then climbing up the seam and the far receiver bending his vertical toward the boundary at the top of the route, while the backside receiver runs a flat/slide route underneath along the line of scrimmage to give the QB a checkdown option away from the play-action fake. Primary progression starts with the deep seam/corner route off the TE, works to the vertical breaking toward the sideline, and comes down to the underneath slide route as the outlet against pressure or a jumped double move.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing single high or two high safeties, since this concept is built to exploit single high looks where the deep middle defender has to choose between the seam route and the sideline breaking route. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the defense bites hard on the run fake and linebackers step up, the seam route from the TE will have a clean window before the safety can rotate over. If you see Cover 2 or Cover 4 with two safeties staying deep and split wide pre-snap, expect both vertical routes to be capped, so plan to work the underneath slide route as your primary answer. Beware user-controlled linebackers or a spy dropping into the throwing lane on the seam read, since a patient defender sitting in the middle third can jump that route if the QB stares it down too long. Man coverage on the outside with no safety help over the top is the biggest green light for this play, since both verticals become one-on-one win opportunities for your receivers against the sideline throw.
Usage Tips
Use PA Slide on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when you have already established the run game from Wing Slot Offset personnel, since the fake sells harder against defenses keying run tendencies. Check the safety depth pre-snap. If both safeties are sitting shallow or you see a single high safety cheating toward the seam, target the receiver breaking to the sideline at the top of his route since that throw window opens against Cover 3 and Cover 1. Hot route the underneath slide receiver to a quick out or speed out if you are facing an aggressive underneath zone defense, this gives you a faster access route to punish blitzes. Pair this play in sequence with Inside Zone Split and Dbl Mtn Inside Zone Split from the same set so the play-action fake mirrors your actual run action and freezes linebackers. Avoid calling this on 3rd and long since the play-action mesh with the offensive line takes an extra half second and can get the QB hit before routes fully develop against exotic pressure looks.
