Smash out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset gives you the classic high-low combo on the right side: the outside receiver runs a hitch at the sticks while the wing TE releases up the seam and breaks into a corner route over the top, stretching any cornerback vertically and horizontally. On the backside you get a deep corner/flag route from the far receiver paired with a short in-cut underneath, giving the quarterback a two-level read on that side as well if the defense rotates away from the smash concept. This is a classic Cover 2 beater built to attack the corner who has to choose between the hitch and the corner route, with the quarterback progression starting right (hitch to corner) before working backside if the initial read is covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check corner depth on the smash side: a corner playing tight man or bailing into a deep third signals trouble for the hitch route and favors the corner route beating over the top. Watch the flat defender (usually a corner or nickel in Cover 2) after the snap, since he has to choose between sitting on the hitch and sinking with the TE's corner route, and that hesitation is your throwing window. Key the safety rotation post snap, because a hard rotation to the smash side leaves the backside corner and in-cut isolated against fewer defenders. Look for user linebackers spying or dropping into the shallow in-cut lanes, which tells you the CPU or opponent is sitting on the underdneath route and opens up the deep corner route instead. Cover 2 with aggressive flat drops and Cover 4 with a hard robber underneath are the coverages most likely to jump the hitch or corner route early, so be ready to reset your progression to the backside combo if you see either shell pre snap.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short to medium since the hitch is a built in checkdown against soft corners playing off coverage.

Identify the safety shell pre snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, trust the smash combo to the flat defender and throw the corner route as soon as the CB commits to the hitch.

Hot route the backside in-cut into a deeper dig or drag if the defense shows man coverage across the board, since the smash side alone will not beat tight man unless the corner route wins vertically.

Pair this play with Smash Y-Post or Scissors Smash in your call sheet so the defense cannot key on the same flat-corner stretch every snap.

Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, look opposite to the backside corner and in-cut combo since the smash side becomes tougher to complete with an extra deep defender rotating over.
