Jet HB Angle uses jet motion across the formation as misdirection while the halfback slips out of the backfield on an angle route, working underneath toward the flat or middle of the field depending on how the defense flows. This is primarily a man beater, since the angle route is designed to create separation against linebackers who bite on the jet motion or trail the running back out of the backfield. The primary read progression starts with the jet sweep fake to freeze the second level, then works to the HB angle route as the first read, with any underneath crossers or the backside TE serving as the checkdown if the angle is blanketed.

Defensive Reads

Read the linebacker assigned to the running back before the snap, if he is aligned tight to the box and shows man responsibility the angle route should win quickly off the release. Watch for a defender spying or shadowing the jet motion man, since that confirms man coverage principles and tells you the HB angle route is the priority target. Against zone coverage look for a linebacker sitting in the underneath hook zone near the angle route breakpoint, this defender can jump the route if the quarterback is late with the throw. Identify blitz packages pre-snap by checking for extra rushers on the edge, since the angle route also serves as a built-in check versus pressure by getting the ball out fast before the pass rush arrives. Man coverage with no underneath help and linebackers biting on jet motion is where this play wins most consistently, while disciplined zone drops or a lurking safety over the middle can shut it down.

Usage Tips

Motion the jet man pre-snap and watch how the defense reacts, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you are likely facing man coverage and the HB angle route will have a favorable matchup against a linebacker or slower defender. Use this play on early downs or third and short since the angle route develops quickly and gives you a high percentage completion versus blitzes or man coverage. Hot route the backside TE into a shallow drag or spot route to give yourself a second option if the defense sits on the angle route with an underneath zone defender. Pair this play with Jet Touch Pass and Fake Jet HB Wheel from the same set so the defense has to respect the jet motion as a real running threat, which opens up the angle route later in a series. Avoid calling this against heavy zone shells with linebackers sitting at the same depth as the angle route break point, since zone defenders can undercut the route if they do not bite on the motion.
