Verts Choice out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset sends four vertical routes into the defense, with the outside receiver on the numbers running a choice route that breaks off the top based on leverage while the inside receiver from that stack climbs straight up the seam. The backside runs a pure go and a shorter dig-like climb, stacking the field with four vertical stems to stress deep zones and man leverage at once. This is a clear Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to attack the seams and the deep middle void, with the primary read starting on the choice route breaking against the corner's leverage before working to the inside seam and then across the field to the backside verts.
Defensive Reads
Watch the safety alignment before the snap, two deep safeties invite the choice route to break outside against soft corner leverage, while a single high safety tells you to work the inside seam hard. Track the corner on the choice route route stem, if he sits and jumps the route early, work the opposite vertical route across the field instead. Read the flat or curl defender on the choice side post snap, if he carries deep with the choice route it opens up room underneath for a check down if available, but this concept has no true outlet so patience matters. Cover 4 or quarters shells with disciplined safeties will squeeze all four verticals and take away the explosive plays, look for a blitz or man leverage instead before calling this. User linebackers dropping into a deep middle lurk can undercut the inside seam route, so watch the middle of the field for a defender sitting at 15 to 20 yards before committing to that throw. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the best trigger to take a shot on the backside go route since it isolates a corner with no deep support.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high, since this play is designed to exploit exactly those shells.
Against Cover 2, key the flat defender and corner leverage on the choice route side, the receiver should break away from the corner's outside leverage into the vacated deep half.
Against Cover 3, target the seam between the flat defender and the deep third corner, the inside vertical from the choice stack will split the zone if the corner sinks late.
Use this on obvious passing downs or after setting up defenses with quicker, high percentage throws like Double Stick or Mesh Spot to bait linebackers into sitting shallow.
Pair this play in sequence with Double Cross or PA Double Post from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the choice route concept and must respect the deep shots off similar formations.
If the defense shows heavy pressure looks pre-snap, get through your progression fast since all four routes take time to develop and there is no built-in hot route outlet.
