Breakdown
Stick Nod Vertical lines up out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset with 12 personnel and shows a two-man stick concept to the left paired with a vertical seam and boundary go route to the right. The left slot runs a quick out while the tighter receiver runs the classic stick nod (a shallow hitch that noses upfield before breaking flat) creating a natural rub for man coverage. On the right side the inline TE fires a vertical seam up the hash while the outside WR takes the top off the defense on a straight vertical, stretching the field and forcing a hi lo conflict on any underneath defender. Primary progression is stick nod flat first as a quick answer against pressure or man coverage, then bounce to the seam TE against zone drops, with the outside vertical as the home run shot when the safety bites underneath.
Defensive Reads
Read the flat defender on the stick nod side first: if he sinks with the nod route the quick out is open, if he jumps the out the nod sits down for an easy conversion. Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, a shallow drop signals zone and opens the seam TE crossing behind him, while an aggressive walk up read blitz or A gap pressure. Watch the deep safety alignment presnap, a single high safety leaning to the field side leaves the vertical WR one on one on the backside, while two deep safeties usually mean the safety help rolls to the seam TE and the shot play is less likely to hit. Man coverage with no help over the top is the biggest green light for the outside vertical, especially against Cover 1 or Cover 0 blitz looks where the corner is isolated. Zone heavy shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with sinking underneath defenders should send this progression to the stick nod flat quickly since the seam and vertical routes get bracketed by the deep zone defenders.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or third and short when you want a built in answer against both man and zone without changing personnel. Pre snap identify single high versus two high shells: against single high the seam TE has a great shot to split the safety and the linebacker if the backer widens. Against two high look immediately to the stick nod side since the flat defender usually cannot cover both the nod and the out in man coverage. Hot route the running back into a check release or swing if you diagnose a blitz, since the stick concept alone can get overloaded versus five or six man pressure. Pair this call with Double Stick or Mesh Spot earlier in a series so the defense has to respect the quick game, then hit them with the vertical shot off the same formation and personnel to keep the picture identical presnap. Against aggressive user blitzers, the stick nod side gets the ball out fast enough to punish any nano blitz timing.
