Breakdown

Dbl Mtn HB Toss is a perimeter run play out of the Shotgun Wing Slot Offset formation that tosses the ball to the HB who bounces outside behind a wall of blockers. The diagram shows the HB motion man taking a lateral toss and following the wing TE and tackle out to the edge, with the offensive line pulling to seal the alley and create a running lane outside the tackle box. This is a pure run play designed to attack the edge before the defense can flow, and the primary read is the HB following his lead blockers to the perimeter, reading the edge defender and cutting inside off the block if the corner or safety fills too fast from the outside.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the defensive end or outside linebacker crashing hard down the line, since this toss is designed to get outside before he can string it out Look for a fast flowing safety in the box who can beat the pulling linemen to the edge and force a cutback Check corner alignment before the snap, since a corner playing too far inside leaves the edge wide open for the toss to bounce outside untouched Identify if the defense is in a run blitz or gap exchange call, as a well timed nano blitz off the edge can blow this play up before the blockers get set If the linebackers are flowing hard with the motion, the HB should be ready to cut back inside against overpursuit

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion to identify if defenders are following the HB, which can reveal man coverage or a run blitz call

Call this on early downs like first and second and ten when defenses are more likely to sit in base personnel and get caught flat footed by outside toss action

If the defense shows a stacked box or extra defenders crashing down, check to a perimeter pass like Jet Touch Pass or PA Jailbreak Screen to punish overaggressive run fits

Pair this toss with Dbl Mtn PA Slide or Z Close PA Toss out of the same formation to keep linebackers honest and force them to respect both the edge run and the play action off it

Hot route the wing TE to a quick out if you see an unblocked edge defender who can blow up the toss before the blockers get set
