Dbl Mtn HB Toss is a perimeter run play out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset with 12 personnel. The diagram shows the HB motioning to the backfield before taking the toss and bouncing outside, with the offensive line and TEs releasing to the edge to set up a wall of blockers for the pitch. This is a pure run play designed to attack the edge before the defense can flow, not a play-action or pass concept. The primary read is the edge blocking: the ball carrier keys the widest blockers to decide whether to bounce outside or cut it up inside the first wave of blocks.
Watch for linebackers cheating toward the motion pre-snap, which signals they are keying HB toss tendencies from this formation. If the defense runs an outside contain or scrape exchange, expect the edge to be sealed and the play forced back inside. Look for a safety rotating down into the box before the snap, this indicates run support is loaded and the toss lane may be tighter than expected. Nano blitzes or edge-set defensive ends that stay home instead of crashing can blow this up before the wall of blockers forms. User a linebacker to fast flow toward the sideline and squeeze the alley if you are on defense, this is the primary counter to shut down the toss.
Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is shifting a linebacker or safety to match the flow, which tells you if the edge is soft or loaded.
Call this on early downs or short yardage when defenses are sitting in base personnel expecting inside zone or a pass look.
If the defense shows heavy edge alignment with extra defenders outside, be ready to cut this off with Dbl Mtn Inside Zone Split or Dbl Mtn Counter Y from the same set to keep them honest.
User the lead blocker at the point of attack to seal the first defender off the edge, this manually secures the alley for the HB.
Mix this in after establishing Inside Zone or Duo from the same personnel so linebackers stay flat-footed and cannot fast flow to the toss.
