Breakdown
RZ Mtn WR Angle lines up out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset with a pre-snap motion man crossing the backfield on a shallow angle route while the backfield back releases to the opposite flat. The two outside receivers to the trips side run a mountain combo, a deep out breaking to the sideline and a corner route stacking behind it, stretching the defense vertically and horizontally on that side. The angle route out of the backfield is the primary read against man coverage since it creates immediate leverage on a linebacker, but if the defense flows to it, the QB should progress to the deep out sitting underneath the corner route on the boundary.
Defensive Reads
Watch the linebacker assigned to the motion man, if he trails across the formation it confirms man coverage and opens up the angle route for an easy pitch and catch. Check safety depth before the snap, a single high safety leaves the corner route on the mountain combo vulnerable to getting beat over the top. Cover 3 zone defenses with a hard flat defender can take away both the angle route and the deep out, forcing the QB to hold the ball and look for the corner route late. User controlled defenders sitting in a shallow zone or spying the middle of the field can jump the angle route, so be ready to reset to the corner route or the opposite flat route. Blitz heavy fronts that send extra rushers off the edge often leave the angle route uncovered since it clears out fast, making this a good check versus known pressure tendencies.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you have a man coverage tell and should target the angle route immediately.
Hot route the flat back into a quick option route on third and short to give yourself an outlet if the angle route gets jumped by a spying linebacker.
Pair this play with Double Cross or Mesh Spot in your call sheet since both use motion out of the same Wing Slot Offset look, keeping the defense guessing on run fits and coverage rotation.
Best used on third and medium or in the red zone against nickel and dime packages where linebackers struggle to cover the angle route in space.
If the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap, prioritize the corner route on the mountain side since the deep out will be sitting in a soft zone window.
