Breakdown

Cheat HB Jailbreak Screen is a designed HB screen out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset with 12 personnel. The offensive line releases downfield to set up a wall of blockers while the outlet route (shown in blue) loops underneath before settling as a checkdown option near the line. The primary read (olive route) shows the HB releasing to the flat and turning upfield behind the guard escorts, making this a screen play designed to bait pass rushers and beat aggressive man or blitz-heavy defenses.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing hard off the edge presnap, since that flow works in your favor for the screen setup. Key on middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits in a shallow zone drop instead of blitzing he can sniff out the screen and blow it up. Identify Cover 0 or Cover 1 man blitz looks presnap, this play is designed to exploit those aggressive fronts. If the defense shows a spy or a linebacker who stays home reading the backfield, expect this play to get shut down quickly. On the user side, if the human defender flies upfield to the quarterback instead of sitting on the screen, that is your green light to release the throw.

Usage Tips

Call this when you see linebackers creeping toward the line of scrimmage or safeties showing two high with man coverage indicators, since blitz heavy defenses take themselves out of the play. Use this on early downs after establishing inside zone or duo runs from this same set, so linebackers stay biased toward the run fake. Let the screen develop fully before throwing, since the offensive line needs a full count to release and get in front of the HB. Pair this in a sequence with Inside Zone Split and Same Side Zone from Wing Slot Offset to keep defenders flowing downhill before you hit them with the screen. Avoid calling this against zone shells with disciplined linebackers who sit and read, since they can jump the screen lane.
