Dbl Mtn GT Counter is a gap counter run out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset with 12 personnel, pulling the guard and tackle to lead the HB across the formation for a counter step play. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down at the point of attack while the backside guard and tackle pull around to kick out the edge defender and lead through the hole, with the HB taking a counter step before hitting the gap. This is a pure power run play with no route concept attached, so the read progression is entirely about the HB pressing the counter action and following his pulling linemen to the crease created by the kick out block.
Key the play side edge defender and see if he stays home or crashes down, since a disciplined edge can blow up the kick out block from the pulling tackle. Watch the middle linebacker's initial step, if he bites hard on the counter action and flows away from the eventual crease this play hits for a big gain. Identify if the defense is running a run blitz off the edge or a scrape exchange technique, both of which can beat the timing of the pulling linemen before they reach the point of attack. Check strong safety depth and box count pre-snap, a stacked box with an extra defender near the line signals the offense should bail into a pass check instead. Post-snap, track any user-controlled linebacker sitting in the counter lane, since a user defender reading run and flowing under control can fill the hole before the pullers get there.
Run this on early downs like first and second and ten to establish the counter action before layering in play-action off the same look.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the defensive front to confirm the play side has enough numbers for the down blocks, and check if the defense is stacking the box which can signal a run blitz.
Pair this with Mtn Counter and Dbl Mtn Counter Y later in a series so linebackers start over-pursuing counter steps, then hit them with Fake Jet HB Wheel or PA Read off the same formation to punish flowed defenders.
If the defense shows a heavy front with the strong safety cheating down, hot route the TE to a chip block or check to Inside Zone or Duo out of the same personnel to attack a lighter box.
Trust the pulling guard and tackle, do not try to bounce this outside early since the design wants the HB to press the hole created by the kick out before deciding to cut.
