Fake Jet HB Seam is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset that sells jet motion across the formation before the QB pulls and works a seam shot off the fake. The jet fake pulls linebackers and safeties toward the sweep flow while the seam runner splits the hole created between the hash and the widened defender, with the offensive line sliding into a play-action pass protection to sell the run fake. This is a man beater and a zone beater in the middle of the field, with the primary read being the seam route out of the backfield fake, working to any breaking crosser or checkdown as a secondary progression if the seam is capped.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing man or zone match, since aggressive man coverage on the seam runner with no safety help over the top is the biggest tell that this play will hit. Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting shallow near the box expecting run support, the jet fake will pull them further out of the seam lane. Post-snap, track any user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, since a spy or rat defender in the seam window can undercut the route and bait a turnover. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with safeties staying high and disciplined against play-action are the best counters, since they take away the seam window before it develops. Watch for a delayed blitz or nano blitz off the edge, since the seam route develops with some depth and a fast interior pressure can force the QB off his first read before the window opens.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or in run-heavy personnel situations so the jet fake actually holds linebackers and safeties, since defenders keying run tendencies will bite harder on the motion. Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties rotating down toward the motion, that confirms they respect the jet sweep and the seam window will open up big. Hot route the fake HB into a checkdown or flat route if you are worried about a blitz, giving yourself an outlet against pressure looks. Pair this with Jet Touch Pass and Zone Fake Jet earlier in a series so defenders start jumping the jet motion, then hit them with the seam shot off the same fake once they overcommit. Attack single high shells and Cover 3 rotations where the seam runner threatens the middle third before the deep safety can get over the top.
