Double Pivot is a route combination play out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset with 12 personnel that attacks zone defenses with two pivot routes on the left side. The outside receiver runs a vertical stem before snapping back on a pivot to sit underneath, while the inner slot receiver pushes upfield and pivots outside, creating a natural pick and layered read against zone coverage. On the right side, the TE runs a quick out that settles at the sideline while the outside receiver stems vertically before breaking to a corner route, giving the quarterback a high low stretch on that side. The primary read starts with the corner route on the boundary, works down to the flat out route from the TE, then comes back to the double pivot combo on the backside if the initial reads are covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch for cornerbacks playing off coverage pre-snap, since that tips zone and opens up the pivot routes underneath. Identify if the strong safety rotates down into the box or stays deep, because a rotated safety leaves the corner route on an island against man coverage. Post-snap, key the underneath linebackers and their zone drop depth, since a shallow drop from the middle linebacker can jump the pivot routes if the QB is late on the read. Watch for a user lurking in the shallow middle zone, since that defender can undercut the pivot route breaking inside and create a turnover opportunity. Against blitz looks, identify if the TE is left uncovered on the quick out, since that becomes the automatic answer to a nano blitz or extra rusher.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap to identify if you are facing a single high shell or two high shell, since the corner route on the right attacks single high defenses hard. Use the pivot routes to beat zone drops that are late to react, since the pivot creates natural separation as defenders flow with the initial vertical stem. If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, prioritize the corner route as your first read for an explosive play. This play works best on second and medium to second and long, giving you enough field to let the routes develop and the QB time to work through the progression. Pair Double Pivot with PA Dig or Double Cross in your play calling sequence, since those plays sell similar initial route stems but attack different zones, keeping the defense guessing on tendencies.
