Breakdown
Drive out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset lines up two receivers stacked tight to the formation with a wing TE alignment, and the route concept is a classic Drive combo paired with a deep crosser and a corner route on the backside. The inside receiver runs a shallow drag underneath while the slot TE breaks off a dig at the second level, creating a natural rub for man coverage, and the backside receiver clears out on a deep corner route while another runs a deep in from the far side to occupy zone defenders. This is primarily a man beater given the rub-heavy design underneath, though the crossing combo at depth also stresses zone defenders who have to sink and wall off the dig. The primary read progresses from the shallow drag as the hot route versus pressure, up to the underneath dig sitting down in the void, and finally to the deep corner route if the safety bites down.
Defensive Reads
Watch the slot corner and nickel defender pre snap, if they are aligned tight and showing man leverage the rub route underneath will likely spring the drag open immediately. Key the safety depth before the snap, a two high shell tells you the corner route on the backside has to work against a defender with help, while a single high safety opens up that same corner route for an explosive gain. Post snap, track the underneath linebacker responsible for the dig, if he sinks late or gets caught in traffic from the rub concept the dig will be wide open for a chain-moving gain. This play struggles against a hard robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone, since that user-controlled defender can jump the drag and dig combo before either route develops. Look for Cover 4 shells with the corners playing off, since the dig and corner route combination is designed specifically to attack the seams and hooks that Cover 4 traditionally leaves open.
Usage Tips
Read the flat defender first, if he widens with the drag the dig behind him will be sitting in a soft spot against zone coverage.
Use this on second and medium or third and medium since the drag and dig give you two easy underneath completions to move the chains.
Check the corner route on the backside pre snap if you see a single high safety, that route has a good shot to win over the top against Cover 3 or Cover 1.
Hot route the shallow drag into a quick out if you see man coverage with an aggressive slot corner jumping the route at the snap.
Pair Drive with Double Cross or Mesh Spot in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both crossing combos and cannot key on the drag every snap.
