Breakdown

Ohio Spacing is a five-man spacing concept out of 12 personnel that stretches the field horizontally at different depths. The near TE runs a quick out to the flat while the outside receiver on that side sits down on a hitch just past the sticks, creating a stacked pick style read on that half of the field. On the backside, one receiver runs a deep vertical up the seam while the other clears out on a shallow drag underneath, and the running back does not factor into the route concept based on the blocking shown. This is a classic Cover 3 and Cover 4 beater built to attack the zone voids underneath and outside the numbers, with the primary read progression starting at the flat route, then working to the hitch, and finally to the backside drag if the underneath defenders widen with the flat.

Defensive Reads

Key the flat defender first since if he widens with the TE's out route, the hitch behind him becomes an easy completion. Watch the deep third or deep quarter corner on the backside, if he bites on the shallow drag route, the vertical seam route will be wide open behind him. Check linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers who are keying the backfield will struggle to cover both the flat and the hitch, which is the entire point of this concept against zone. If the defense shows man coverage with a slot corner pressed on the near TE, this play loses value since the flat route has no natural spacing advantage against man leverage. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or lurking underneath the drag route, since that is the most common way defenses take away the easy backside completion in spacing concepts.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short to third and medium since the flat and hitch combo gives you multiple sticks throws against zone drops. Pre snap, identify whether the corner over the outside receiver is playing off or bailing into a deep third, since that tells you if the hitch will be open immediately. If the defense shows Cover 3 with a hard flat defender, hot route the flat runner into a quicker option or peek the backside seam route for an explosive shot play. Pair this with Double Cross or Mesh Spot from the same set to give defenders a similar initial picture before hitting them with crossing patterns instead of spacing, which keeps zone defenders guessing on their drops. Against Cover 4 look immediately to the hitch route sitting in the deep zone seam before the safety can rotate down.
