Inside Zone out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset lines up in 12 personnel with two wide receivers split far outside and a tight bunch of five blockers on the line, including the wing tight end offset in the backfield next to the QB. The HB takes the zone handoff and reads the play side double team, working through his zone track to find the first crease created by the offensive line's combo blocks. This is a pure zone run play with no pass option attached, so the primary read is the play side A gap to B gap crease, and if that is clogged the back needs to bounce it outside off the double team leverage created up front.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if both backers are stacked tight behind the line it signals run support and you should expect quick downhill fills on the zone track. Identify the safety shell, a two high look with soft box numbers is a green light for this run since it means one less defender in the box to clog the zone lanes. Key the play side defensive end and 3-technique, if they are shooting gaps hard on the snap the cutback lane behind the zone action will open up. Beware nano blitz packages that stack extra rushers at the line pre-snap, since this play has no built-in answer against a hard edge crash or interior overload blitz. Против man coverage on the outside with single high safety, defenders will crash down fast on run action, so be ready to check into a play-action concept from this same formation if you see man alignment on the perimeter WRs before the snap.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to keep the defense honest before dialing up play-action shots later in the sequence.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box against 12 personnel, consider audibling to a perimeter run or motioning the wing TE to adjust the numbers.
Pair this with Inside Zone Split and Dbl Mtn Inside Zone Split later in the same drive so the defense cannot key run fits based on formation alone.
Set up PA Slide or PA Read off this same look since the formation and initial mesh point mirror the zone run action, forcing linebackers to respect the run fake.
User the play side guard or center after the snap to seal off any late-arriving linebacker blitz through the A gap, since a free hitter here kills the play before the back can find the crease.
