PA Cheat Dagger runs the classic Dagger concept out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset (12 personnel) with a play-action fake to hold the linebackers. Off the snap, the outer receiver clears deep on a vertical seam while the inner slot receiver runs the dig underneath, creating the trademark high-low Dagger stretch on one side, while the backside receiver runs a deep comeback and the wing TE releases on a shallow drag crossing the field underneath everything. The fullback or attached blocker checks release out to the flat, giving the QB a layered progression from deep seam to the dig, with the drag and comeback as answers versus zone drops or blown coverage. This is a play-action, man and zone beater built to attack both Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells depending on which route the QB reads open.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and spacing. Two safeties split wide at depth signals Cover 2, which this dig-and-seam combo is designed to shred. Watch the flow of the middle linebacker after the play-action fake. If he bites hard on the run fake, the dig route will sit wide open in the vacated zone. Post-snap, identify any user-controlled defender sitting in a lurk position over the dig route. A disciplined user linebacker sinking to that landmark can jump the throw and bait a pick six. Man coverage on the slot defender is a green light for the dig to win on the crossing angle away from a trailing defender, especially against Cover 1 or Cover 0 looks. A hard blitz off the edge combined with man coverage behind it is the biggest threat to this play since the play-action fake takes time to develop, so check protection or hot route the drag to a quick release if you see blitz indicators pre-snap.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or 2nd and medium so the play-action fake actually influences the linebackers instead of getting ignored on obvious passing downs.
Key the safeties before the snap. If you see two deep safeties sitting at 10-12 yards, expect Cover 2 and prioritize the deep seam route sitting behind the underneath defenders.
If the safety rotates to a single high look post snap, this confirms Cover 3, so work the dig route sitting in the vacated middle zone before the flowing linebacker can wall it off.
Hot route the drag runner to a shallow cross or spot route if you are seeing heavy underneath zone traffic, giving the QB a quick outlet against a fast blitz.
Pair this with Double Cross or Mesh Spot in your play-calling sequence so the defense sees similar formation and motion but has to respect both a crossing shallow concept and the vertical seam/dig stretch of Dagger.
