Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check if linebackers are shaded hard to the jet motion side, since that flow indicates a lack of gap discipline the counter will exploit. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker to see if they crash down on the pullers or hold their gap, which determines whether the QB should cut it back. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the QB or sitting in the counter lane, since a disciplined spy or scrape exchange can blow this play up immediately. This play struggles against disciplined zone fronts that stay square and read run first, and it can get stuffed by an inside blitz that fills the counter gap before the pullers arrive. Look for safeties rotating down into the box pre-snap, since an extra run defender near the line can outnumber the blocking scheme and force a negative play.
Usage Tips
Use the jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing hard toward the sweep side, then let the counter blocking scheme attack the vacated crease. Call this on early downs or short yardage when defenses are keying run gaps aggressively, since the misdirection punishes downhill linebacker triggers. Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are already cheating to the motion side you have a green light to keep the ball and follow your pullers. Pair this play with Jet Touch Pass and Zone Fake Jet from the same set so defenders see the same jet motion but have to respect both the pass and counter run threats. Sequence this after a few Inside Zone or Duo calls so the defense sells out on straight downhill reads, making the counter misdirection hit even harder.
