This is a power run play designed to attack downhill run gaps, and the primary read is the play side gap defined by the pulling blockers, working through the mesh point before the QB decides to keep or plant and go vertical through the hole.

Defensive Reads

Key the play side linebacker and edge defender first, if they widen out with jet motion the counter lane opens immediately behind the pulling blockers. Check safety depth pre-snap, single high shells with the strong safety cheating toward motion leave the counter gap thin and vulnerable to a quick cutback. Man coverage that has defenders chase jet motion across the formation is the biggest tell that this run will hit clean since it pulls defenders out of the box. Beware defenses that show two high safeties and keep linebackers gap sound without over pursuing motion, that alignment forces the QB into a longer developing read and gives defenders time to fill downhill. User the play side linebacker or a spy defender to squeeze the counter lane, since a disciplined user read on the pulling guard can blow this play up before the QB reaches the hole.

Usage Tips

Use jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing with the sweep action, then plant off cadence to attack the counter gap before the defense resets. Save this play for early down situations, second and short or third and short, where defenses are more likely to sit in base run fits or play action honors. Combine this with Jet HB Angle or Fake Jet HB Wheel earlier in a drive so the defense keys jet motion as a passing threat, opening up the QB counter action later. Watch backside linebacker depth before the snap, if they are crashing hard toward jet motion on tendency you have an easy cutback lane. Pair this play with Zone Fake Jet or Fake Jet Scissors in your call sheet to keep the defense guessing between run and play action off identical pre-snap motion.
