Jet HB Cross Screen lines up out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset with 12 personnel, using jet motion across the formation to sell run action before the screen develops. The two outside receivers run vertical clear-out routes to pull corners and safeties downfield while the offensive line sets up a screen wall to the flat, and the HB works across the field on the cross screen behind the line of scrimmage. This is a screen pass designed to beat aggressive man and blitz-heavy looks, with the primary read being the HB on the cross screen unless the defense sits on it, in which case you climb the ladder to the vertical routes on the outside.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check if the defense shifts linebackers or a safety toward the jet motion, since that indicates they are trained to key on the HB and will jump the screen. Man coverage with corners pressed at the line is the biggest threat to this play because a fast defender can read screen and undercut the throwing lane before blockers get set. Zone shells with linebackers sitting at intermediate depth also disrupt this concept since underneath defenders can react to the HB crossing behind the line. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender spying the QB or sitting in a shallow zone, as this is the primary lurk threat that can jump the screen route. If defenders bite hard on the vertical routes and vacate the underneath area, the cross screen has a clean lane and the play succeeds.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs when the defense has shown blitz tendencies in the previous series, since the jet motion and screen wall punish overpursuit. Watch pre-snap for corners playing off man or safeties creeping into the box, both of which signal the defense is selling out against the run or expecting a quick pass. If the defense shows a hard blitz call, snap the ball right as the jet motion crosses the formation to get the screen set before pressure arrives. Pair this with Jet Touch Pass or Fake Jet HB Wheel earlier in a drive so the defense keys on jet motion, then hit them with the cross screen to counter their leverage. Avoid calling this against disciplined zone teams that spy the backfield, since zone defenders sitting underneath can blow up the screen before the wall forms.
