Slants Y Stick out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset gives you a three level stick concept to one side paired with a vertical seam release from the backfield. The two outside receivers run slants that stack the underneath zones while the slot runs a stick route sitting at the sticks, and the running back releases up the seam as a fourth option against man coverage. This is primarily a man beater thanks to the natural picks created by the stacked slants, but it also works against soft zone shells since the stick sits down in the hole. Primary progression starts with the vertical seam route from the backfield, works down to the stick sitting underneath, then peeks at the two slants working across the field.

Defensive Reads

Check the safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are deep and level you are likely seeing a two high shell that can be attacked with the stick sitting underneath. Watch the slot defender at the snap, if he sinks into a zone drop rather than mirroring the stick route you are facing zone coverage and should target the seam route from the backfield instead. Man coverage defenders will trail the slants tightly which creates natural rub picks, look for a linebacker or safety in man to get hung up on the stack. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can jump the stick route quickly, so if you see the corner sink into the flat be ready to reset to the slant on the opposite side. A blitz off the edge with man coverage behind it is the toughest look for this play since it removes the seam outlet, so use max protect or hot route the running back to stay in against known blitz teams.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs when you expect man coverage since the slant stack naturally rubs off defenders trailing in man. Check the pre-snap alignment of the slot corner or nickel, if he is playing tight man look immediately to the stick route to sit in the void underneath. On third and short, hot route the stick to a flat if you see a hard blitz coming off the edge to give the QB a quick outlet. Pair this play with Double Stick or Double Cross in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot key on the stick concept alone. If the safety cheats over the top of the seam release from the backfield, work the slant combo on the opposite side since the stacked slants will beat trailing man defenders.
