PA Read out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset uses a play-action fake to hold the linebackers before attacking downfield with two vertical routes on the outside numbers. This is a play-action man beater designed to isolate the two verticals against man coverage, with the crossing corner route serving as a natural zone beater against Cover 3 or Cover 4 rotations, and the primary read progression starts with the deep out-breaking vertical before working back to the crossing route and finally the flat out as the checkdown.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a two-high or single-high shell, since single-high safety looks with man coverage underneath are the most vulnerable to the outside verticals. Watch for corners playing tight man technique at the line, as that alignment signals press man coverage that this play is designed to exploit with the vertical releases. Post-snap, key the linebackers immediately after the play-action fake, if they step up hard to defend the run the flat out and crossing route both open up quickly. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 2 zone shells where safeties stay deep and do not bite on the fake, since the verticals get bracketed. Be wary of user-controlled defenders dropping into a lurk position over the crossing route, as that is the primary throwing lane defenses will try to jump in competitive play.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or in play-action friendly counts like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when defenses are geared up to respect the run fake.
Key the safeties before the snap, if they are sitting at depth in a two-high shell the outside verticals have the best chance to win against off coverage.
If the linebackers bite hard on the play-action fake, the flat out route becomes an easy underneath completion for positive yardage.
Pair this with Inside Zone or Inside Zone Split from the same set earlier in a drive so the defense respects the run fake and linebackers step up, opening the play-action window.
Hot route the crossing route to a deeper dig if you are facing heavy Cover 3 zone drops, since it gives the route more separation from underneath linebackers sinking into their zones.
