Post snap, track any user lurk defender sitting in the intermediate zone, he can jump the corner route break if the quarterback stares it down too long. Look for linebacker depth on the play-action fake, shallow linebackers who bite hard on the run open up the mountain seam route immediately behind them. Man coverage without safety help over the top is the weak point of this play, while two high shells with a rotating safety to the corner route side shut down the primary read.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or in play-action favorable counts like second and short to sell the run fake and freeze linebackers before the corner route develops.
Check the strong safety alignment pre-snap, if he is sitting shallow in the slot area the corner route has a clean throwing lane once it breaks outside.
Hot route the flat route into a quick out or drag against teams that load the box and blitz off the edge, giving you a faster answer against pressure.
Pair this play with Dbl Mtn Split Zone or Dbl Mtn HB Toss earlier in a drive so the run fake carries more weight and linebackers bite harder on the play-action.
Against man coverage, key the corner defender's leverage at the snap, if he plays inside shade the slot corner route wins outside immediately off the break.
In two high shells, look to the mountain seam route first since the corner route can get squeezed by a rotating safety.
