Jet Sprint HB Slide is a play-action sprint out concept out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset that shows jet motion across the backfield before the snap to hold the defense honest. Off the fake, two vertical routes stretch the boundary from the outside receivers while a shallow drag crosses underneath, giving the QB a sprint-out flood look to one side with a built-in checkdown. The offensive line slides protection to the sprint-out direction, and this is a man and zone beater that stresses flat defenders and forces linebackers to choose between the drag and the vertical stems, with the primary read starting on the underneath crosser before working up to the vertical routes on the sprint side.
Defensive Reads
Watch for cover 3 sky or cover 4 shells presnap since the sprint-out vertical routes can stretch a single deep defender to that side. Key the flat and curl defenders after the snap, if they crash on the jet motion fake the shallow drag will come open immediately. Identify man coverage by checking if a defender shadows the jet motion across the formation, this play beats man coverage with natural pick action from the crossing routes. Look for edge pressure or a contain blitz to the sprint-out side, since this can collapse the pocket faster than the QB can set his feet. Sniff out overload blitzes to the boundary, which put immediate pressure on the sprint-out protection and force an early, inaccurate throw.
Usage Tips
Use the jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing with the sweep action, then attack the vacated space with the sprint-out flood.
Check the flat defender before the snap. if he widens with the jet motion, the shallow drag will be wide open underneath.
Roll the QB out with real pocket movement since the sprint-out protection is not designed to hold up long against outside pressure or contain blitzes.
Pair this with Fake Jet HB Wheel and Jet Touch Pass in the same set so defenses cannot key on the jet motion without respecting the run fake and wheel route out of the backfield.
Best used on early downs or manageable third downs where a boot action can catch overaggressive run defenses flowing hard to the motion.
