Breakdown

PA TE Scissors is a play-action pass out of Singleback Wing Slot 12 personnel that uses a crossing scissors concept from the two tight ends to attack vertical seams and the deep sideline. Off the run fake, the two inline tight ends cross paths, one working a deep corner route to the far sideline while the other breaks into a deep post over the middle, creating natural picks against man coverage. The backside receivers run a comeback and a flat/out combo while the running back releases to the flat, giving you a built in checkdown against underneath zone drops. Primary progression starts with the scissors crossers (post first, corner second) then works down to the flat route and finally the checkdown out of the backfield.

Defensive Reads

Read the safeties at the snap, if they both stay deep and shuffle toward the sideline the post route from the scissors concept should be open behind them. Watch the flat defender and outside linebacker, if they widen with the flat route it opens a throwing lane for the corner route breaking to the opposite sideline. Identify man coverage by checking if defenders trail the tight ends through their stems, the natural pick at the crossing point of the scissors concept should spring one of them open. Beware of a Cover 3 sky or cloud shell with the corner sitting on the flat, this can jump the shallow route and force you to climb the pocket for the deeper post. Look for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the tight ends are running vertical routes and not staying in to block, a fast blitz can beat the play action fake before routes develop.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake by holding the play action animation out fully before climbing the pocket, this freezes linebackers and opens the scissors crossers underneath.

Use this on early downs or in run heavy personnel packages where defenses are keyed on stopping HB Zone Wk or Off Tackle, the play action tag punishes overaggressive run fits.

Pre snap, check for two high safeties versus single high, since this concept is tagged as a Cover 2 and Cover 4 beater the post route from the scissors concept will split the safeties if they bite on the corner route.

If the defense shows man coverage, hot route the flat route into a quick out to give yourself a rhythm throw against man beaters that are picked off by the crossing tight ends.
