PA Fork Y-Dig is a play-action dig concept out of Singleback Wing Slot with 12 personnel that fakes the run to hold the linebackers before working a deep crossing route. Off the fake, one outside receiver clears vertically on a go route while the tight end runs the fork breaking route back across the middle underneath the go, and the slot receiver works the deep dig from the opposite side into the vacated middle of the field. The remaining tight end/wing releases on a flat route to the play side as a checkdown and the running back stays in to help sell the fake and provide a late outlet. The primary read progression starts with the deep dig, works back to the fork route underneath if the middle is clogged, and finishes with the flat route as the outlet against pressure or when the underneath windows close.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify two high safeties versus single high. Two high with linebackers creeping up on run action is when this dig hits hardest. Watch linebacker depth after the play-action fake. If the linebackers step up hard to sell run support, the dig route will have a clean throwing lane behind them. Key the flat defender or underneath zone defender on the play side. If he sinks with the fork route or widens too far, the flat route becomes an easy checkdown. This play struggles against zone coverages that keep a robber or lurk defender sitting in the intermediate middle, since that defender can undercut the dig route. Watch for man coverage disguised as a single high shell with a blitz. If the corners are in tight man and a linebacker or safety blitzes off the edge, get the ball out quickly to the flat or fork route before the dig has time to develop.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when the defense is likely to bite on run action, since the play-action fake is critical to opening the dig window.

Check the safety alignment before the snap. Two high safeties with soft linebacker depth means the dig will sit in a big throwing lane, so trust the primary read.

If you see man coverage indicators such as tight press corners or a single high safety rotating late, hot route the fork route into a shallow drag or option route to beat man leverage underneath.

Pair this play with PA Y Cross Flood or PA Sail Dig earlier in a drive so the defense respects similar play-action shells, then hit this dig concept when linebackers start sitting on flat and cross routes.

Against aggressive blitz teams, keep the running back in as a check release and use the flat route as a quick answer, then come back to this same concept once the blitz eases off with Four Verticals or PA Dagger to stress the defense vertically.
