Breakdown

PA Y-Sail out of Singleback Doubles shows a play-action fake to hold the linebackers before the QB rolls through his progression. The Y (TE) runs the sail route to the flat while the outside receiver on that side pushes vertically up the numbers to clear space behind him, creating the classic sail stretch on one side of the field. On the backside, one receiver runs a deep vertical stem and the other breaks in on a shallow drag underneath, giving you a full-field flood concept off the play fake. This is a Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater, and the primary read progression starts with the deep outside vertical to see if the corner bites on the run fake, then works down to the sail/flat combo, and finally checks the backside drag as the outlet.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify two high versus one high safety alignment, this play is designed to attack Cover 2 corners who have to defend both the flat and the deep vertical, and Cover 3 flat defenders who have conflicting run/pass responsibilities off the play fake. Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting shallow expecting run they will be late getting to their flat or curl zone drops, which is exactly what this play exploits. Post-snap, key the corner on the sail side, if he sinks with the vertical route the flat is wide open for an easy completion, if he sits in the flat the vertical route behind him is the answer. Beware user-controlled safeties dropping into a deep lurk or robbing the deep vertical route, this can bait a bad throw over the middle if the QB does not respect the rotation. Man coverage with an overhang defender on the TE can disrupt the sail route at the line, so check for press alignment on the Y before snapping since it changes the leverage of the route.

Usage Tips

Sell the play fake by holding the ball on the RB mesh point for an extra beat before rolling your eyes to the sail side, this freezes linebackers and opens the flat window against man coverage.

Use this on early downs (1st or 2nd and short to medium) when defenses expect run, since the play fake carries more weight and safeties are more likely to step up.

If you see a two high shell pre-snap, key the deep vertical route first, if the safety stays home the corner is isolated on the sail route underneath him.

Hot route the backside drag into a deeper crosser or spot route if you are facing zone heavy playbooks that clog the shallow area with linebackers.

Pair this with HB Power O or Inside Zone earlier in a drive so the defense respects the run fake, then hit them with PA Y-Sail once linebackers start creeping up on early down run reads.
