Jet Sweep out of Singleback Doubles is a pure run play built around pre-snap jet motion that gets the ball to your slot receiver or motion man on an outside track before the defense can flow. The offensive line and TE execute a reach and seal blocking scheme, pulling the play side blockers to wall off the edge while the backside blockers cut off pursuit angles. This is not a man beater or zone beater in the passing sense since it is a designed run, and the primary read progression starts with the edge defender's leverage, then works to the alley defender (safety or linebacker filling), and finally the last force defender near the sideline.
Defensive Reads
Key the play side defensive end or outside linebacker first, if he crashes down inside on the snap the edge is wide open for the sweep to bounce. Watch the alley defender, usually a safety rotating down or a linebacker flowing hard to the play side, since his fit determines whether this gets cut back or stays outside. Identify if the defense has bumped a corner or safety over pre-snap to match the jet motion, that shows man coverage or a scrape exchange call designed to beat this exact play. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the motion man or crashing the mesh point, aggressive user pursuit outside can be countered by cutting the run back through the vacated inside gap. This play struggles against disciplined contain rushers who stay home on the edge and defenses running a hard scrape exchange, but it gashes teams that overpursue with linebackers flowing hard to the flow side.
Usage Tips
Snap the ball as the motion man crosses the formation to maximize the head start and prevent defenders from diagnosing the sweep before the handoff. Check defensive numbers to the play side before the snap, if the defense is outnumbered or has a linebacker cheating away from the motion, this play hits big. Use manual motion timing to catch defenses in a base or zone shell that has not adjusted to the jet action, since man coverage teams that mirror the motion man with a defender can blow this up. Pair Jet Sweep with PA Jet Sweep and Zone Fake Jet in the same set to keep linebackers honest and force them to respect both the outside run and the play action boot off the same motion look. Best called on early downs or short yardage on the perimeter, avoid calling it into a defense that shows heavy edge contain or a nano blitz set up outside the tackle box.
