Sluggo Seam lines up out of Singleback Doubles with 11 personnel and attacks the defense vertically on both sides of the field. The backside slot runs a seam straight up the hash to occupy the middle of the field while the backside outside receiver runs a sluggo (slant and go) to shake off a jam and stack the corner deep. On the play side, the outside receiver releases vertically before breaking hard outside on a corner route, and the flanker runs a shallow drag underneath from the play side backfield alignment across the formation, giving you a checkdown if the deep shots are covered. This is a man beater built to punish aggressive corners and single high shells, with the sluggo as the clear primary read against man coverage and the seam as the answer versus zone drops in the middle of the field.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the corner over the sluggo receiver is in press or off man, since press coverage is exactly what this route is designed to defeat with the double move. Check the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety opens up the seam route to split the defense, while two deep safeties signal Cover 2 or Cover 4 and make the corner route the better shot. Post-snap, watch for a robber or lurking linebacker sitting in the middle of the field, since that defender can undercut the seam route if he reads the quarterback's eyes. Beware of a Cover 3 sky or cloud shell, where the corner rolls down to take away the drag and a deep third defender sits on the sluggo, forcing you to hold the ball and give the corner route or seam more time to develop. Blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the edge make the drag route the fastest answer, so key on the offensive line's protection assignment to see if the quarterback has time for the deeper reads to break open.

Usage Tips

Look to the sluggo route first against any corner playing tight man or press coverage since the double move is designed to break ankles and create a step of separation deep.

If the safety shows single high pre-snap, trust the seam route to split the linebackers and safety before the deep half closes, especially against Cover 1 or Cover 3.

Use the drag route as your outlet against zone blitz looks or when the pass rush gets home quickly, since it clears underneath in a hurry and keeps the play alive on third and medium.

Motion the drag receiver pre-snap to get a free access read on man versus zone, if the defender follows across the formation you know it is man coverage and the sluggo should win.

Pair this play with Four Verticals or Dagger in the same set to keep defenses honest on vertical shots, then mix in Curl Flats or Double Slants to slow down aggressive underneath defenders before coming back to Sluggo Seam.
